Folarin Balogun rejected a €46 million move to Everton just minutes before the transfer window closed. The 25-year-old United States striker withdrew from the deal over concerns about his treatment and health by Everton's medical department.
Monaco's managing director Thiago Scuro confirmed the dramatic collapse. "Five minutes before the close of the (English) transfer window… I signed the contract, and Everton signed the contract," Scuro said. "At the last moment, the player decided not to sign." The window closed on April 18, leaving the Toffees without their target and Monaco in a financial bind after budgeting for the sale.
The primary reason was the player's reported unease with Everton's medical setup. Balogun, who has scored 31 goals in 91 appearances for Monaco, decided the potential risk to his wellbeing was too great. This left Monaco scrambling, as they had planned to sell Lamine Camara to Chelsea if the Balogun deal went through. The Ligue 1 club stated they were still discussing different players, including Balogun, until the final day.
Despite the high-profile miss, Everton were active in securing other reinforcements. They brought Jack Grealish back to Goodison Park on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The club also completed the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon.
The failed move means Everton's search for attacking depth continues as they prepare for their next fixture.
Balogun, born in New York City but raised in London, was also involved in a controversial international incident. He was suspended for a red card received in the USA's round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. An intervention saw FIFA suspend that ban, allowing him to play against Belgium, a decision that drew criticism aimed at president Gianni Infantino. Balogun later admitted the furore affected the team, who lost that game 4-1. Everton's focus now shifts entirely to their upcoming Premier League clash with Manchester United.
