Everton are holding firm on their £80 million valuation of Jarrad Branthwaite amid interest from Liverpool. The club have no intention of selling the 24-year-old defender, who they view as a key part of their long-term plans.
David Moyes's side, who sit seventh in the Premier League on nine points, regard Branthwaite as an elite centre-back when fit. He has played every minute of their league campaign so far this season, a period that includes a current two-game winning run. His return to full fitness in pre-season was followed by a second senior England cap in the recent 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.
Liverpool are conducting background work on a potential move for Branthwaite next summer, viewing him as a possible long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. However, Everton's stance is complicated by the local rivalry. The club believe a transfer across Stanley Park would strengthen a direct competitor with a player they have developed. This contrasts with their previous dealings with Manchester United, to whom they rejected two offers totalling around £80 million for the defender in 2024.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown confirmed the interest. "Liverpool are working on a possible move for Branthwaite for next summer," Brown said.
With a contract running until 2030, Everton are under no immediate pressure to sell. The £80 million figure is seen as a starting point for any serious approach, but the club's preference would be for a move abroad or to a non-rival Premier League side if a sale became necessary. Such a deal could provide financial room under Profit and Sustainability Rules and fund several additions for Moyes, but the decision regarding Liverpool is considered separate.
Branthwaite's importance is reflected in the team's solid defensive start, having conceded just three goals in five league matches. Everton's next challenge is an away trip to face Hull City on 11 October.
