Everton has marked Nigeria's 66th Independence Day with a tribute celebrating its historic ties to Nigerian football. The club shared a special graphic on social media on Thursday, October 1, 2023, to honour the anniversary of the nation's independence in 1960.
Everton posted the message "Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!" alongside images of past and present players who have represented the Super Eagles. The graphic featured Daniel Amokachi, Joseph Yobo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Victor Anichebe, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Toni Payne, Henry Onyekuru, Hope Akpan, and Coby Ebere.
Daniel Amokachi joined Everton in 1994 and played a key role in the club's 1995 FA Cup triumph, scoring twice in the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur. Joseph Yobo arrived in 2002 and became the first African player to captain the side. Yakubu enjoyed a productive spell at Goodison Park, while Victor Anichebe progressed through the club's youth academy. Alex Iwobi spent four seasons with Everton after joining from Arsenal in 2019. This is not the first time the club has marked the occasion, having posted similar tributes in 2019 and 2022.
The tribute arrives as Sean Dyche's team enjoys a positive start to the Premier League season. Everton currently sit seventh in the table with nine points from five matches, having gone unbeaten with two wins and three draws. Their recent form includes consecutive 1-0 victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town.
With the international break underway, the focus now shifts to the next league fixture. Everton travel to face Hull City, who are eighth, on October 11 as they aim to extend their two-game winning run. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page.
