Everton were warned not to sign Cenk Tosun in 2018 by the club's icon Duncan Ferguson. Ferguson, who is the club's second top Premier League scorer, had major reservations about the Turkey international striker. He told the club not to sign Tosun because he looked 'like an old man'. Despite this, the club went on to sign Tosun for £27million. Tosun scored 9 goals in 50 Premier League games for Everton. He also scored 11 goals in 61 matches in all competitions. Ferguson's reservations about Tosun were revealed in his autobiography Big Dunc, published last year. Ferguson said that he and Sammy Lee, who had come into the club with Sam Allardyce, got called into a recruitment meeting. They were all talking about Cenk Tosun of Besiktas, raving about him, 'let's take him', they all said. Ferguson said that he went into the meeting with all of them, the technical director Steve Walsh is in there. And they're all talking about Cenk Tosun of Besiktas, raving about him, 'let's take him', they all said. How old is he? '27', somebody replied. Everyone else was laughing and going you can't say that Dunc. Well, I am saying it. My point was Tosun didn't look like he was good enough for Everton. He didn't look vibrant. He didn't look like somebody you wanted to take. 'He doesn't look quick enough', I said. Tosun would go on to play for Kasimpasa in the Turkish top flight, but is now old enough to qualify for veterans' football. He celebrates his 35th birthday today.
