Everton are poised to end Idrissa Gana Gueye’s decade-long association after a blunt call from a David Moyes ally urged the club to ditch a new deal this summer.

The 36-year-old midfielder’s contract expired on July 1, but talks over an extension have stalled as the Toffees forge ahead in midfield with Hayden Hackney’s arrival and Merlin Rohl’s permanent switch. Gueye featured 25 times in the Premier League last season but now faces the exit, with Everton languishing 13th on 49 points after a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on May 24.

What did the insider say?

Bryan King, a former Everton senior scout and David Moyes ally, told Football Insider that Gueye would be lucky to secure another contract. “I think he hasn’t been the player he has been. I think he’d be very fortunate if he got another contract, to be honest,” King said. “I could see him going to the Middle East or America. He’s a good footballer and he’s an honest footballer.”

King praised Gueye’s durability-he’s racked up nearly 250 Everton appearances and 100+ caps for Senegal-but argued age has caught up. “Age catches up with you. He certainly isn’t the player he was when he first came to Everton,” he added. “Is he worth another year? If we’re short in players in midfield, then he could be worth another year. I think it’s time to move on.”

Where does Gueye stand now?

Gueye returned to Everton in 2022 after PSG paid £28m, and he’s stayed dependable ever since. “The goal was to get the club back up to where we feel it belongs-playing in Europe, fighting towards the top of the league,” he said last year. “We haven’t reached that goal yet, so we keep going.” With Everton 36 points behind leaders Arsenal and on a three-game losing streak, Gueye’s push for Europe is fading fast.

What happens next?

The Toffees are already shaping up for life without Gueye. They travel to Stoke City on July 28, and the midfield overhaul rolls on with Hackney installed. Gueye’s next stop could yet be Saudi Arabia or MLS, but his Everton chapter looks set to close after ten years of service.

Everton’s recent run reads LLLDD, and with just 47 goals scored and 50 conceded, the side sits on a -3 goal difference as the transfer window cranks up.
